Exam fact
How long is the food handler test?
About two hours of course, then the assessment. That's how the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) describes its Professional Food Handler (PFH): seven modules, self-paced, with an online assessment at the end. NEHA publishes no separate time limit and no question count for the assessment.

Where the law sets the numbers
Some places write the test format into law. In California, Health and Safety Code §113948 says the course and exam behind a California card are designed to take about two and a half hours, with at least 40 questions and a 70% minimum score (as of October 2026). That's a floor for every provider selling California cards; it says nothing about the length of NEHA's own assessment. More on the state in California food handlers card.
Southern Nevada runs its own in-person test: 20 multiple-choice questions for a first card, 10 for a renewal, and 70% to pass, per the Southern Nevada Health District as of October 2026.
On the line, the printer sets your pace, and you learn to move before you've finished reading a ticket. Leave that habit in the kitchen: on the assessment, read every option to the end before you click.
Sitting the course
Can I stop the course and come back later?
NEHA's online course handbook calls the course self-paced with no deadline for completion (as of October 2026). Splitting the modules over two evenings fits that; the one-attempt rule is about the final assessment.
Is the Spanish course the same length?
NEHA sells the Spanish online course at the same $15.00 (NEHA store, as of October 2026) and says its materials come in English and Spanish. It doesn't publish separate timings for either.
So how many questions are on a food handler test?
It depends on whose test. NEHA hasn't published a count for the PFH assessment. California law sets at least 40 for California cards, and Southern Nevada's first-card test has 20 (sources above, as of October 2026).
